The Kobo Elipsa 2E, a new 10.3-inch E Ink e-reader and writing tool, is being released by Kobo. For $399.99, you can purchase the new Kindle Scribe, an Onyx Boox Nova Air C competitor that has an enhanced stylus that lets you annotate books and documents straight on their pages.
Preorders for Kobo’s newest e-reader are now open for those who are eager to get their hands on one. Customers who preorder the device in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia will also receive a $25 Kobo e-gift card as an added bonus from the Rakuten-owned Kobo.
On paper, the Kobo Elipsa 2E seems to be only a slight improvement over the Kobo Elipsa. Both are available for $399 when purchased with a stylus, however only the original Elipsa comes with a cover. The two e-readers also include Bluetooth compatibility and 10.3-inch glare-free displays with integrated blue light exposure reduction technology. Both also include 32GB of storage and the ability to convert handwriting to text. Sadly, neither device is waterproof, and they both integrate with cloud services so you can export notes as well.
Kobo asserts that the Elipsa 2E should offer “a better and faster writing experience” due to the addition of a new stylus and other upgrades. One is that the newly created Kobo Stylus 2 attaches magnetically to the Kobo Elipsa 2E. It’s also rechargeable, so you won’t need to keep buying AAA batteries since it doesn’t come with them. For easier use, the eraser is now situated on the back rather than closer to the tip at the highlight button.
Additionally, even if users change preferences like font size or page layout, annotations will now always be displayed. This new update will save users a step as previously, altering page layout settings would conceal annotations under an icon that you would have to click on to access. Other enhancements include a built-in notebook feature that is simpler to search and a longer battery life that “should last weeks,” but we’ll have to try it for ourselves to determine whether this promise is accurate.
The e-reader is more environmentally friendly, just as the new Kobo Clara 2E, as part of Kobo’s greater effort to lessen its environmental impact. For instance, the modern e-reader is currently constructed of approximately 85% recycled plastic and 10% ocean plastic. The brand-new Kobo Elipsa 2E SleepCover, which puts the e-reader to sleep when closed, is constructed from more than 97 percent recycled plastic.
Kobo also introduced the Kobo Plus service, which is the company’s answer to Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, along with the Elipsa 2E. More than a million ebooks and tens of thousands of audiobooks are available to subscribers of the three-tier membership, starting at $7.99 per month.
