Unfortunately, no new MacBook Pro models were released in 2022 – everyone should have excluded the M2 13-inch monstrosity with Touch Bar. As anticipated, there are a ton of fresh reports about upcoming models coming out of the rumor mill. And the most recent rumor suggests a significant modification to the MacBook Pro’s display that may alienate users.
Apple is developing a touchscreen MacBook Pro model, according to a claim from analyst Mark Gurman in the Bloomberg news service. Engineers are “actively working” on the next MacBook design, the report continues. The new design would have the same form factor as the current one but would have a touchscreen on the front. When it comes to leaks, Gurman has an extremely good track record, accurately calling the release of the iPhone SE in 2022, the always-on display in the iPhone 14, and more.
As of right moment, it appears that the development of this touchscreen MacBook Pro is still in its infancy. It’s still a ways off since the project is still in development, assuming Apple decides to move further at all. Gurman estimates that the device might be available as early as 2025 and have an OLED panel as well.
Since Apple has stated that it has no plans to merge macOS and iPadOS, it is likely that the touchscreen MacBook Pro will run a modified version of macOS that includes touch capabilities. Whether the MacBook would enable a touch-only mode, like other 2-in-1s on the market, is currently unknown.
Apple has resisted the introduction of a touchscreen MacBook. We wouldn’t be shocked if Apple Park was covered in signs that read “Keep your hands and fingers at the bottom of your MacBook at all times.” It’s obviously shocking because Steve Jobs has previously opposed this idea.
It would give the highly desired extra professional features that many want from the iPad. However, it would create confusion over the iPad lineup and be extremely difficult to utilize. We’re not entirely convinced this is in Apple’s plans, but it’s interesting to watch the firm work on refining the concept.
