Your Android phone might support Apple’s MagSafe thanks to the new Qi2 standard.

In 2023, Android will support magnetic charging thanks to the new Qi2 wireless charging standard, which heavily draws inspiration from Apple’s MagSafe.

We have compatible chargers and devices thanks to the Qi wireless charging standard, which has been around for many years at this time. But now that the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has confirmed that Qi2 (pronounced “chee two”) will be based on the MagSafe wireless charger from Apple, it’s time for something fresh.

The WPC stated that it anticipates phones and accessories to support the new standard by the end of this year, which indicates that MagSafe’s features will soon be available on an Android phone near you.

The iPhone 12 was released alongside Apple’s MagSafe, which supports 15W wireless charging. Additionally, it includes magnets that keep the wireless charger and iPhone in place while charging. That is an extra function that Qi2 is prudent to have as it is something that conventional Qi chargers do not offer.

Placing the phone in the correct location for proper charging is a nuisance, and vibrating notifications can cause the phone to quickly slip out of position. These are the two main problems with standard Qi chargers. According to the WPC’s press statement, magnetic connectors like MagSafe stop that from happening. According to Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the WPC, “Qi2’s perfect alignment enhances energy efficiency by decreasing the energy loss that might occur when the phone or the charger is not aligned.”
