Microsoft revealed that its Xbox gaming platform will become the first carbon-conscious console accessible, enabling Microsoft to lessen its environmental effect and support the company’s effort to become a carbon negative, water positive, and waste-free organization by the year 2030. Following Microsoft’s declaration that it would strengthen its environmental efforts in March of last year, a new update will shortly start to circulate among Xbox Insiders.
More information about what it means to be the first carbon-aware console is provided by Microsoft.
Xbox will schedule game, app, and OS updates for your console at specific times during the nightly maintenance window when your console is plugged in, connected to the Internet, and regional carbon intensity data is available. These updates may reduce your console’s carbon emissions because a greater percentage of the electricity is coming from lower-carbon sources on the electric grid.
For instance, your Xbox will wake up when it can use the most renewable energy in your local energy grid, rather than randomly during the nightly maintenance window between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. This reduces your reliance on fossil fuels, reduces CO2 emissions, and may even result in financial savings. Despite currently only being accessible to Xbox Insiders who use Shutdown (energy saving), all Xbox players will soon have the chance to update so that their Xbox consoles are environmentally friendly.
