The SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD is a small, portable drive with USB-C connectivity and NVMe technology that fits in the palm of your hand. It is pre-formatted to function with Mac computers but can be changed to run with Windows PCs.
Specifications
Max read speed: 1050MB/s
Max write speed: 1000MB/s
Available capacities: 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB
There are four sizes of the G-Drive SSD: 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. Most users will likely find it to be sufficient, but avid photographers who travel frequently may wish for a higher capacity or require the purchase of a second drive.
As I already indicated, it boasts NVMe technology, which when combined with USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) connectivity, allows for read and write speeds of up to 1050MB/s and 1000MB/s, respectively.
SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD is ruggedized to withstand being dropped from a height of three meters and crushed by up to 2000 lbs yet weighing only 90g. Moreover, it has IP67 weather/dust resistance and resistance to vibration.
Western Digital has dramatically reduced the price of the G-Drive SSD, making it much more alluring. This price reduction may be the result of the release of products like the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, which offers a twofold increase in transfer rate.
The drive also includes software that can be downloaded and installed on a computer to enable 256-bit AES-XTS Hardware encryption with a password.
Build and handling
With dimensions of just 95 x 50 x 15mm, the SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD fits comfortably in your hand and is small enough to fit into a camera bag or laptop bag.
Two USB-C cables, one USB-C to USB-C and the other USB-C to USB-A, are included with the G-Drive SSD from SanDisk. Fortunately, these cables are about 49 cm long, making the drive simpler to operate than one with a short cable when it’s attached to the back of a desktop computer or to a laptop resting on your knee.
The drive’s aluminum core serves as a heat sink, and the plastic casing has vents to prevent the most crucial part from becoming overheated.
If you are storing sensitive information on the drive, it is simple to set up a password to safeguard it, but it is crucial to remember that if you forget the password, SanDisk cannot recover or reset the drive.
Performance
The SanDisk Professional G-Drive SSD looks smart and feels tough. It also transfers files from a computer and back quickly, if not at the same speed as a 2000MB/s drive such as the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2. However, it’s also more affordable and if you’re not planning on using it as a working drive while you edit 6K or 8K 60p ProRes 422 HQ footage, it makes a great choice. It’s fine for most 4K applications and perfect for storing stills.
